These medals are amongst the first productions of Messrs Pinches, who were to become a prolific firm of medallists. They exhibited at the Crystal Palace, which had opened on its new site in 1854, and from where they promoted their new business, striking medals of popular and news-worthy events and selling them to the public as souvenirs of their visit. The three medals, which are more commonly seen in white metal, are contained within their fitted, oblong, case of issue.
